THE COOPERATIVE OF CAMBRILS, LEADER OF THE CONSORTIUM
Lifecoop2020 project
The Agricultural Cooperative, along with three engineering companies, has led a research centre and a communication company, the LIFE COOP 2020 project (2014-2018). This European environmental project aimed to demonstrate the economic and environmental viability of a new productive model for agricultural cooperatives, integrating energy savings, generating energy through renewable sources and producing biomass. Rural areas must deal with a wide variety of environmental problems, such as the proliferation of organic waste, the difficulty of balancing the use of resources with energy efficiency, and the progressive increase in the amount of abandoned land.
As a result, agricultural waste (e.g., olive stones) has been revalued as an energy crop to obtain biomass with the consequent use of renewable energies. Energy has been saved thanks to the optimization of processes and equipment. The most significant figures are the reduction of electricity consumption by 20.32%, the reduction of emissions by 163.7 tonnes of CO2 as well as the total elimination of solid fuels used in the industry.
